Updated: Jul 26, 2021

"|| Gurur Brahma, Gurur Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshwara Guru Saakshaat Parabrahma, Tasmai Shri Gurave Namah ||"

Guru Purnima is a popular Hindu festival celebrated throughout the country. On this day, disciples offer Puja or pay respect to their Gurus. The word 'guru' is derived from two Sanskrit words, Gu and Ru, which together mean the one who dispels the darkness and takes towards the light. Thus, 'guru' simply refers to the spiritual guide who enlightens disciples by his knowledge and teachings.

Guru Purnima is celebrated on the Purnima Tithi (Full Moon Day) in the month of Ashadha. It is also known as Vyasa Purnima because the sage who wrote the famous Hindu epic Mahabharata, was born to Satyavati and Sage Parashar on this day. As per Hindu texts, Lord Shiva transmitted the knowledge of Yoga to Saptarishis on this day. Lord Shiva is considered the first Guru or Adi Guru of the world.

However, it is also believed that Gautama Buddha on this day gave his first sermon at Sarnath, and it is also the day that commemorates the birth of Veda Vyasa, the author of the great Indian epic, Mahabharata.

On this day, many devotees observe a fast and offer prayers to their spiritual gurus. Devotees even visit temples to seek the blessings of their guru.
